When I was eight years old our family moved to Clearfield, PA. My father bought a grocery store called “The Public Market”. One of my favorite things to do was to play store. “Daddy, Daddy, can I play store when the store is closed?” I’d ask my dad.
Growing up I worked in the store on Saturdays. One of my special jobs was to fill orders for poor families that would come to our store seeking food. My dad was always kind and concerned for others in need.
---Well, Saturday, August 21 was our distribution day at Stewart Avenue. I thought I was prepared. We had shopped at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Our “Shopping Buddies” and I transported 2,400 pounds of food to SAELC. Our Evening Packers Team packed the food bags and set up the selection tables. Peggy Terrick and Elaine Rice wrapped the meat patties. Sally Terbovitz put all of our clerical papers in order. I was ready!
We opened the door on Saturday at 10 A.M. What we weren’t prepared for were eight new families that were “walk-ins”. My Saturday team pitched in and we were able to give food orders to all of the needy families.
After we closed our doors at 12 noon – the thought popped into my head – “Daddy, Daddy, I don’t want to play store anymore!”
I would like to thank everyone who always helps us with food pantry work. Many people volunteer two or three times a month. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

When Pastor Pat announced an Evening Prayer Service as a new venture at our Church, I decided, with some apprehension, to attend.
As I arrived, Pastor was sitting on the Church steps --- alone. “Uh-oh”, I thought. “This is not going to be a comfortable half hour – just her and me.” (Those of you who know me must agree that I’m not a very vocal member, let alone a vocal ‘pray-er’.) But she assured me that I could, but need not, pray aloud.
Soon the Biblical 2 or 3 (and more) of us had gathered together. As we sat in the new Prayer Center, with candles flickering on the small altar and chirping cicadas outside the open window, we shared meaningful music, quiet reflection, readings and prayer. Slowly, a sense of peace and serenity enveloped us. Quite surprising . . . and nice.
Do come, if you can. I hope you will find it a half-hour well spent, as I did. If you cannot attend, feel free to call or send in your prayer requests and concerns, both personal and on behalf of our Stewart Avenue Church Community.
